How to Draw Pennywise
If you want to learn how to draw Pennywise, this lesson shows how to illustrate this terrifying clown in a simple and cute style.

How to Draw Pennywise: Introduction
This tutorial on how to draw Pennywise shows the character in a simplified and cartoon-like form. The drawing includes all the main elements, such as bright hair, a ruffled costume, and a balloon. The style of the drawing is very simplified, but you can adjust the proportion to get a more realistic result.
When working with this tutorial on how to draw Pennywise, pay attention to the proportions between the head and body. The head is drawn very large and the facial features are very simplified. The eyes, nose, and smile should sit low on the face to let a lot of room for the massive forehead.
The costume includes a wide collar, puffed sleeves, and round buttons. Each element is reduced to clear, repeatable lines. Avoid adding unnecessary detail even if you want to draw Pennywise in a realistic style.
Once the base is done, you can experiment with colors, facial expressions, or even change the balloon to another prop. This simple Pennywise drawing works well on its own or as part of a Halloween-themed collection, in addition to vampire and zombie drawings.

How to Draw Pennywise
- Sketch the head and torso shapes.
Start drawing Pennywise by outlining two basic shapes: a large shape for the head and an oval for the body. Keep your lines of your initial sketch smooth and light so they can be adjusted later if needed. You won’t need to worry about details yet – those come in the next steps.
- Draw Pennywise’s eyes, nose, and mouth.
Begin with two large circular eyes placed at the center the face. Below the eyes, draw a small oval nose, and then add a wide smile with curved lines. Then, draw the line of the teeth with another curved lines inside the shape of the mouth.
- Add the signature makeup and ears.
The marks start just above each eye and stretch upward to the forehead, and also curve downward from the bottom of each eye to the corners of the mouth. Next, add two small ears on either side of the head. Each ear should be level with the eyes. Make the ears round and simple, without any internal detail.
- Draw Pennywise’s hair and collar.
Now it’s time to add some more recognizable features to the terrifying clown and draw Pennywise’s hair and collar. First, sketch the hair, which is large and triangular, with sharp points on the sides and top. After that, add the ruffled collar below the head. Use wavy lines to form a cloud-like shape around the top of the body.
- Detail the costume of the clown.
Use smooth and curved lines to form the skirt of the character, creating the bottom edge with a smooth wavy line. Above the skirt, draw the belt using two parallel lines, then add a round button at the center of the chest and another one below the belt. Keep the buttons evenly sized and aligned.
- Sketch the puffed sleeves and hands.
Now it’s time to draw the arms, starting with the puffed sleeves just below the ruffled collar. Finish with gloved hands – use simple curves for the fingers, with three visible on each hand. Try to keep both arms equal in length and similar in position.
- Draw the legs and feet of Pennywise.
Next, move down to the legs, and draw them short lines and curved shapes for the puffed parts. Then sketch the shoes – each shoe is large and rounded, almost bean-like in shape. The soles should be flat at the bottom, and the tops curved smoothly.
- Finalize the drawing and add the balloon.
First, sketch a string coming up from the character’s left hand (right side of the page). At the very top of the string, draw the balloon, that consists of a small triangular bottom part a large oval shape for the body of the balloon. This prop is one of the most recognizable features of the character.
- Add color to Pennywise.
To color your drawing of Pennywise, use orange or red for the hair, depending on the version you prefer. Fill in the nose and facial paint lines with the same red tone. The balloon and buttons should also be bright red. For the outfit, stick with light gray or beige, and use a darker shade for the shoes and belt.
Conclusion
This drawing of Pennywise, as all my previous horror characters, was based on a simplified, cartoon-style version that keeps the details simple but still recognizable. You can modify the proportions or change the pose if you want to make the drawing closer to a specific scene.
To continue working with similar designs, try drawing other characters from horror stories in the same simplified style. For example, you might like drawing a witch or Frankenstein, using the same approach with big heads, basic lines, and expressive facial features.
