Basic Information on How to Draw a Bat

So, in this lesson, I will learn to draw a bat. This will be a fairly simple tutorial because we used a very simplified drawing style. The basic steps look like drawing the simplest geometric shapes. We imagined the bat’s body as two small ovals – it looks like the body of a large beetle or another insect. However, we maintained the proportions between the body and wings and also did not forget about the sharp teeth.

Colors are quite important. Due to the simplistic style, we won’t be using shadows – just a couple of highlights, which we’ll be sure to mention. However, the color scheme is very important and we will work hard on this.

You can use this tutorial or its appendices to create part of a large Halloween painting. It could also be part of a Batman comic or some other fantasy story. Bats in general have often become the heroes of horror stories, although in fact they are quite harmless creatures (apart from the risk of infections) that require care and help. Many bats are endangered species of animals and humanity is now trying to preserve their population.

How to Draw a Bat

  1. Draw the torso of the bat.

Here, this part of the bat’s body looks like a simple oval. Draw this just below and to the right of the center of your piece of paper.

  2. Draw the head.

Add another oval that intersects the shape from the last step as in our example. Pay attention to the ratio of the sizes of these figures. The head should be slightly more flattened than the body. However, the width of these figures is approximately the same.

  3. Draw the ears.

The ears look like two elongated triangles with rounded tops. Look at these large triangles that are located on the top of the head. The height of these figures is slightly less than the height of the body.

  4. Draw the wings.

This is a very important step. Draw large outlines of the wings. Please note – this is not a symmetrical figure; the wing on the left looks a little shorter and smaller due to the peculiarities of the angle.

  5. Draw the legs.

And here it’s already very simple. Add two short straight lines to the bottom of the bat’s body. Then add three more short strokes on each line.

  6. Depict the eyes.

These are not just two points. Draw two small ovals and color it in. You can draw this a little larger than in our example.

  7. Add the facial details.

These are already small details. Draw a mouth with a pair of triangles (these are teeth) and the inner parts of the ears. By the way, the teeth should not look too large, they should be barely noticeable.

  8. Detail the wings.

Draw smooth lines inside the outlines of the wings. This is the bone base of the wings, between which thin leather membranes are stretched. This allows bats to fly very well and quickly.

  9. Color the Bat.

Avoid colors that are too bright. Use dark brown and purple colors. Notice the white highlights inside each of our bat’s eyes. Light pink is a great color for the inside of the ears.

As we said, you can draw a bat in several different ways. We have already shown the most basic method. In fact, there are a huge number of drawing methods, but we have collected some of the simplest and most accessible for beginning artists. Try different drawing methods and choose the one that suits you best.

Method 1: Easy Step-by-Step Bat Drawing

Here we see a bat that is positioned completely frontally. It’s much easier to draw in this position. There are no changes in symmetry due to camera angles and no dynamic poses.

Method 2: Super Easy Bat for Beginners

There are slight differences here from the previous picture. We decided to remove the highlights from the bat’s eyes and also used a slightly different sequence of steps. You can also see a different wing shape here – the outlines look more rounded. It’s even easier to draw such a bat. If you want to complicate this drawing a little, you can add teeth, paws, fur or other details of the appearance of this nocturnal animal.
