How to Draw Jax
Mortal Kombat has been a popular fighting game for over three decades. Today, I’ll show you how to draw Jax from the series.
How to Draw Jax: Basic Information
This tutorial will show you how to draw Jax, a well-known character from Mortal Kombat, in a simplified cartoon style. Jax is recognized for his muscular build and mechanical arms, both of which are essential to include in this drawing. While this version simplifies the details, it’s important to keep certain elements clear and recognizable.
Key aspects to focus on include maintaining the correct proportions for his body. Jax has a strong upper body, so his torso should be broad and defined, especially in the chest and shoulders.
The mechanical arms are a defining feature of Jax, and it’s crucial to draw them with clear, segmented lines. Even in a simplified style, the lines separating each section of his arms should be neat and evenly spaced.
The facial features should be minimal but positioned correctly to maintain balance. Jax’s head is typically larger in proportion to his body in this style, and his short hair can be drawn with simple curved lines.
While the legs are simplified, they should still show his strong physique, with a focus on smooth, clean lines. By following these guidelines, you can create an accurate, simplified drawing of Jax.

How to Draw Jax
- Draw the head and torso of Jax.
For the head, draw an oval shape that’s slightly wider at the top. Below the head, add a slightly elongated oval to represent his torso, connecting it directly to the head. This will form the foundation for the rest of the body. Make sure to keep the lines light and simple.
- Illustrate the facial features.
Now it’s time to draw Jax’s facial features. Begin by adding two small, oval-shaped eyes near the middle of the face. Beneath the eyes, draw a small curved line for the nose. Finish the face with a simple, gentle smile. The lines should remain really simple.
- Outline the hair and ears.
Draw his short, neatly styled hair starting from the top of the head, creating a simple hairline that curves slightly. Add small, rounded ears on both sides of the head, just below the eye level. These details will start shaping Jax’s head, making the character more recognisable.
- Draw the legs of Jax.
Start by sketching two straight vertical lines extending from the torso downwards, curving slightly as they reach the feet. As we are drawing Jax in a simplified cartoon style, there’s no need to focus heavily on details. Draw the legs in a simplified manner, while keeping them clearly recognizable.
- Add the arms of Jax.
From the shoulders, draw long, smooth lines down to form the arms. Draw the arms with smooth, curved lines, and make sure they are symmetrical on both sides of the body. Finish by adding simple, rounded shapes at the ends of the arms to represent the hands.
- Illustrate the arm details.
Starting at the shoulder, draw evenly spaced horizontal lines down each arm to create the segmented look of his cybernetic enhancements. These lines can curve slightly with the natural shape of the arms. Make sure the lines are clean and uniform, with no gaps or overlapping.
- Draw the upper body muscles.
Next, add definition to Jax’s upper body by drawing his chest and abdominal muscles. Start with two smooth, curved lines on his torso to outline the pectoral muscles. For the abs, sketch several horizontal lines across the torso, dividing the space into sections.
- Detail the pant and legs of the character.
Start by outlining the pattern on his pants with slightly angled lines at the waist and thighs. For the boots, use a couple of simple lines to create the top edges. Now take an eraser and remove the guidelines from your Jax Briggs drawing. Also, you can refine the lines of the drawing to make it look more polished.
- Color your Jax Briggs drawing.
Use soft, even strokes when shading in Jax’s skin with a medium brown tone. Color his mechanical arms in varying shades of gray or light blue to create the metallic look, using darker tones for shadowing. His shorts should be colored in shades of purple, and the boots in black.

How to Draw Jax: Common Mistakes
In simplified or cartoon styles, it’s easy to overcomplicate Jax’s face. Adding too many facial details like wrinkles, excessive shading, or intricate expressions can detract from his stylized appearance. Stick to basic features like his eyes, nose, and a simple smile or neutral expression to maintain balance with the overall simplified design.
Jax’s mechanical arms are a defining feature, but many artists draw them with uneven or misplaced segments. These arms consist of several segments that should be evenly spaced and correctly aligned with the contours of his arms. Uneven or incorrect placement can make the arms look awkward and unbalanced.
Jax’s closely cropped hair is a signature part of his look, and misplacing the hairline can throw off the entire head’s structure. Drawing the hairline too high can make the forehead appear too large, while placing it too low may crowd the face. Take time to accurately place the hairline along the top of his head, ensuring it aligns properly with his face.
While Jax’s clothing is relatively simple, it’s important to pay attention to the details. Missing out on his iconic pants design or drawing Jay’s boots incorrectly can detract from the character’s overall look. Focus on illustrating the basic elements of his outfit, such as the angular lines on his pants, the belt line, and the boots’ shape.
