How to Draw a Fireplace: Introduction

I have prepared a new lesson for you in which you will learn how to draw a fireplace. This is a large indoor stove that has an open firebox. The fireplace includes just the key visual traits as a rectangular frame, an arch, and a flame. Simplified drawings like this show how to make something look complete using only a few parts.

The fireplace has a portal, firebox, and chimney. The portal is the front part decorated with decor. The firebox is a chamber in which fuel is burned. The chimney is a vertical flue pipe. In this tutorial I’ll show you how to draw a fireplace and sketch all these parts using very simple shapes.

You can use the acquired skills in the future when you want to portray any room. The fireplace will be able to decorate the interior and get a beautiful drawing. And of course, you can change any part of the fireplace to create your own version of this object.

How to Draw a Fireplace

  1. Sketch the base.

Draw a fireplace staring with a long, horizontal line with two short vertical lines at the ends. This is the lower part of the fireplace. Keep the bottom corners squared. You can experiment by curving the sides for a different style or raising the base slightly to give it the appearance of being elevated from the ground.Sketch the base

  2. Sketch the upper base trim.

Above the base, draw a flat, narrow rectangle. Make the corners rounded at the top edges. You could make this part taller or shorter. Also, you can add decorative elements to your fireplace drawing at this stage to give it a more unique look.Sketch the upper base trim

  3. Draw the fireplace side walls.

From each corner of the ledge, draw two long, vertical lines going upward. These are the main side edges of the fireplace frame. Be sure both lines are straight and the same length. If you want to make a taller or more compact version, adjust the length of these lines.Draw the fireplace side walls

  4. Sketch the mantel shelf.

Finish the basic frame by drawing a wide, flat rectangle across the top. It should sit directly on top of the vertical lines from the previous step. This is the mantel shelf. Some might also add small support blocks beneath the mantel to create a classic look.Sketch the mantel shelf

  5. Draw the fireplace opening.

Inside the center of the outline, sketch a large arch. This represents the main opening of the fireplace. Keep the curve smooth and even, and make sure the vertical lines of the arch are parallel. If you prefer a different look, change this to a rectangular or pointed arch to reflect different fireplace styles.Draw the fireplace opening

  6. Draw the fire and wood.

Inside the arch, draw a flame shape with a few curved points. Below it, add a horizontal log with rounded ends. You can draw two or more logs stacked, or even a metal grate for variation. If you want an unlit fireplace, you could skip the flames altogether and draw bricks inside instead.Draw the fire and wood

  7. Start brick patterning.

Begin sketching short lines along the sides of the arch and below the opening to start the brick pattern. The lines of bricks around the arch should follow the shape of the opening for greater realism. For variation, use stone shapes or a smoother tiled look instead.Start brick patterning

  8. Complete brick pattern.

Now move to the area around the arch and draw the brick texture. To draw brickwork correctly, first draw perfectly straight horizontal lines at equal distances from each other. Next, draw a series of short vertical lines between the long horizontal ones.Complete brick pattern

  9. Paint the final artwork.

Choose warm and cozy tones to color your fireplace drawing. First, paint the fireplace body using various shades of beige or brown. If you want to give the bricks a more authentic look, use a muted orange color. Next, paint the fire a combination of red and yellow, and the log brown.Paint the final artwork

Simple Fireplace Drawing Tutorial

This simple fireplace drawing tutorial demonstrates an easier alternative to the main lesson. The main elements stay the same, but the level of detail has been reduced, as I always do with my simplified tutorials. This version uses fewer lines for the bricks and removes the log inside the firebox. The shapes are also more simplified. And unlike the previous tutorial, here we will draw the fireplace not from the bottom up but from the top down.

Start with the flat top of the mantel using a long rectangle. Next, sketch the base of this part with a few straight lines. Build the vertical body by sketching two straight lines down from each side and connecting them with a horizontal base line.

Draw the lower trim at the bottom with another rectangle. Inside the center area, outline the firebox arch. Draw the flame using smooth lines. Add simple lines to indicate bricks in a clean and easy pattern. In the final step, color the fireplace dark brown, the flame orange and yellow, and leave the inside of the firebox black.

Conclusion

As always, we have drawn a very recognizable object that is familiar to all of us using very simple geometric shapes. We have gone through two methods and tried to cover all variations of drawing a fireplace.

First, we drew a simple and cartoonish but very detailed fireplace, starting from the bottom and finishing at the top. Then we drew an even simpler version using less detail and starting from the top and finishing at the bottom.

Now try drawing an interior using the fireplace as the main part of the room. Or draw a Christmas scene with Santa and socks hanging over the fireplace. And of course, don’t forget to visit other sections to draw a house, learn the process of sketching interior details and learn much more about fine art.
