If you want to learn how to draw Santa, it’s important to know how to draw his hat correctly and neatly, so I’ve created this simple lesson.

I am sure that each of you has seen Santa’s hat many times. This is a must-have element of the Costume of Santa Claus. Santa’s hat is always red and has white fur on the bottom of the hat and on the pompom.

I am sure that doing this drawing lesson will give you a Christmas spirit! You will quickly draw a Santa’s hat because the lesson is designed for beginner artists who have little experience.

In this drawing lesson, you will first draw the outline of the Santa’s hat, then add decorative elements to it and learn how to color this drawing. So, if you’re ready, you can start doing this lesson. I wish you enjoy the drawing process!

How to draw a Santa hat step by step

  1. Sketch the lower fluffy edge.

This Santa hat starts with its fluffy base, so begin with a wavy horizontal line. The irregular outline should look loose and uneven to represent the fuzzy texture of the fur trim. Avoid making the bumps too symmetrical – natural variation will make it look more realistic. Keep your hand relaxed.Sketch the lower fluffy edge

  2. Complete the fur trim.

Now turn the single wavy line into a full band by adding another bumpy line above it, following the same irregular rhythm. Connect the sides to form a long rectangle with soft, cloud-like edges. This part represents the lower trim of Santa’s hat and should look plush and cozy.Complete the fur trim

  3. Draw the main curve of Santa’s hat.

The next step is to give the hat its characteristic curved shape. From one corner of the fur trim, sketch a long, smooth arc going upward and bending to the side. This creates the slouched, soft form of the hat. The curve should rise high enough to give the hat volume.Draw the main curve of Santa’s hat

  4. Continue the hat’s end.

To continue the general outline, draw another long curved line connecting it to the previous arc of the Christmas hat. Connect these two lines to create a small fold as in my illustration. This creates the end of the hat as it folds downward. Avoid sharp angles.Continue the hat’s end

  5. Sketch the inner contour line.

To make the hat end look more complete, sketch a curved line along the inside of the hat’s body to represent to second side edge of this part and fold in the fabric. The line should roughly follow the main curve and create a dimensional look.Sketch the inner contour line

  6. Add another fold to the Christmas hat.

To complete the main shape of the hat, draw another set of curved lines overlapping the previous one. First, outline the part of the hat that fits tightly to the head by drawing a smooth line extending upward from the right edge of the trim. Then connect this line to the previous lines with a short, smooth stroke to complete the hat’s shape.Add another fold to the Christmas hat

  7. Draw the Santa hat pom-pom.

At the tip of the hat, draw the pom-pom, sketching a large circle made of small wavy lines, similar to how you created the fur trim. The shape doesn’t have to be perfect – its irregular edges make it look authentic and realistic.Draw the Santa hat pom-pom

  8. Add texture to the fur edges.

Now strengthen the outline by darkening the final lines. Add small, light wavy strokes along the trim and pom-pom to convey fluffy texture. You can erase any unnecessary guidelines inside the hat or uneven connections between the curves.Add texture to the fur edges

  9. Color the Santa hat with iconic tones.

To paint the hat of Santa, use bright red for the main body of the hat and light blue or grayish white for the fluffy areas. This color combination will make the hat very recognizable.Color the Santa hat with iconic tones

Now you can use the skills you learned in this lesson for your future drawings, for example, if you want to draw Santa Claus or a Christmas card.
