How to Draw a Velociraptor
In this tutorial I will show you how to draw a Velociraptor. This will be a drawing lesson in a simplified, cartoon style. However, here you will see the proportions and appearance of a real dinosaur. Just repeat these simple nine steps and you will get very cool results!

Basic Information on How to Draw a Velociraptor
Velociraptor is a small but very fast and agile dinosaur. This can be seen in the structure of his body – look at the large, powerful lower limbs and the tail, which controls balance. Also, among the body features, one can note the long, elongated head of the dinosaur and small upper limbs. I always recommend looking at your subject and noticing any unusual features before picking up a pencil.
Now a few words about simplifications. A large eye with a highlight, a jagged line mouth and rounded shapes are what I used to create a simplified drawing. I tried to strike a balance between that style and realism.
If you want to complicate this drawing, add texture in the form of scales, draw a narrower and elongated eye with a thin vertical pupil and, of course, do not forget about a more detailed mouth. You can also add a shadow to the surface on which the dinosaur is located, or shadows to the body of the dinosaur itself.

Steps on How to Draw a Velociraptor
Time needed: 30 minutes
How to Draw a Velociraptor
- Draw the outline of the head and torso.
So, draw two large rounded shapes like in my example. The outline of the head is located on the right side of the sheet of paper, the outline of the torso is in the center. These don’t have to be perfectly symmetrical lines.
- Add the contours of the neck and tail.
Connect the contours of the torso and head with two curved lines, add the pointed tail. If the neck looks too long, check the distance between the shapes in the last step.
- Sketch out the facial features.
In a cartoon style, it would be optimal to depict the mouth as a jagged line, and the eye as a large elongated oval. Please note that the eye is shifted to the left edge of the head.
- Draw one paw of the Velociraptor.
Draw a small upper paw. The paw also consists of two figures that connect almost at a right angle. However, use smooth, rounded lines in this step. There are small points only on the claws.
- Add the second paw.
Add the outline of the second paw. Look at the size – this limb looks smaller than the limb from the last step due to the peculiarities of the angle.
- Depict one hind leg.
Our dinosaur has large enough lower limbs to run fast, escape from predators and catch up with prey. Draw the leg closest to us, because of the angle it looks even larger.
- Draw another hind leg.
This limb looks a little smaller due to its distance from us. A little later I will also highlight this feature with coloring.
- Correct inaccuracies.
Use the eraser to remove any unnecessary guidelines. Check all steps for correct proportions and shapes. Correct the mistakes.
- Color the drawing.
Choose any colors to color the Velociraptor. Shades of green or brown will look best here. The limbs farthest from us should have a darker shade of the main color. Of course, don’t forget about the highlight inside the eye.

This PDF archive contains a short version of this Velociraptor drawing lesson, a coloring page and a small template for drawing in another way. If you download this, you can practice your dinosaur drawing skills anytime even without the Internet.
Alternative Drawing Ways
Now I’ll show you a few other ways to draw a Velociraptor. Choose the one that is most convenient for you. In all these guides I follow the same drawing style.
Method 1: How to Draw an Easy Velociraptor
This is a brighter and more colorful version of Velociraptor. Also here I showed an example of drawing a dinosaur without using basic geometric shapes. This is not the most popular way to draw, but you can use it to look at drawing from a different perspective.
Method 2: How to Draw a Raptor
Raptor is a broader, informal name for many small but very fast dinosaurs. Therefore, in this lesson you can see another small dinosaur that rests on two large and powerful limbs. This lesson features a fairly realistic body structure of our prehistoric predator. Note the long, curved tail, open, detailed mouth, and fingered limbs.
Method 3: Velociraptor Drawing for Kids
This is the latest version of Velociraptor for today. And, this velociraptor is similar to the velociraptor from our basic tutorial, however there are slight differences. I decided to experiment a little with the dinosaur’s eyes and used a completely different shape here. This is a semicircle with an oblique upper border, which creates the feeling of an angry gaze.
Conclusion
It was quite interesting, wasn’t it? To be honest, I really love drawing dinosaurs. I draw a lot of them, in different styles and in different poses. I will definitely add some more dinosaur drawing lessons so that you too can practice and improve your skills.
