How to Draw The Mexican Flag
Letโs return to world flags and learn how to draw the Mexican flag, one of the most detailed and complex designs to recreate.

How to Draw the Mexican Flag: Introduction
In this tutorial, I will show you how to draw the Mexican flag. This is one of the symbols of the state. Each country has its own flag, which is a canvas of the correct geometric shape. This canvas can be plain or contain several colors or additional elements.
The Mexican flag consists of three vertical stripes of green, white, and red. Green symbolizes the hope and fertile soil of Mexico. White is a symbol of purity. The red color symbolizes the bloodshed for the country’s independence.
Now that you know the meaning of each color, you can easily draw the Mexican flag. This tutorial will use simple lines. You will see that drawing the flag is very easy. Any child and novice artist will quickly cope with this task the first time.
In this tutorial, try to do all the lines yourself. Train your hand to make straight lines without the use of guides.

How to Draw the Mexican Flag
- Sketch the flagโs upper and lower edges.
To begin, sketch two slightly horizontal lines that will form the top and bottom of the flag. This symmetrical wave will make the flag look more believable, because a real flag always appears to be in motion or hanging naturally. Draw both lines parallel.
- Sketch the flagโs side curves.
Now add the vertical edges to connect the top and bottom lines you just drew. These should follow the flow of the wavy outline so that the flag looks like a single piece of cloth, not a flat rectangle. Use very smooth lines, to continue the effect of fabric moving in the air.
- Add vertical divisions.
The Mexican flag has three vertical bands, so now you need to divide the flagโs shape into equal parts. Lightly sketch two vertical, wavy lines across the flag. They should follow the same curve as the outline, so the sections look like theyโre bending along with the cloth. Try to keep the three areas about the same width.
- Sketch the straight vertical pole.
A flag always needs a pole to be displayed, so now draw a long and thin vertical rectangle along the left edge of the flag. To draw this rectangle, sketch two parallel lines and connect them at the top and bottom. This shape should be straight and thin. The pole should extend above and below the flag.
- Add the flagpole ornament.
Most flagpoles have a decorative ornament at the top, and for the Mexican flag, you can sketch a small round shape above the pole. You can make this detail a little more complicated and draw it as an arrowhead or some other complex shape.
- Draw the eagle for the emblem.
The most distinctive feature of the Mexican flag is the emblem in the center of the white stripe. At this stage, draw the eagle, which is the main part of the design. Donโt worry about small details, just sketch the general shape of the bird. Keep it positioned right in the middle of the white section.
- Sketch the cactus below the eagle.
Once the eagle outline is in place, you can begin drawing the cactus with leaves beneath it. These are the main supporting elements of the coat of arms. Try to keep the shapes simplified, so the emblem is recognizable without being overly complicated.
- Finalize and polish the flag.
You can add some texture to the cactus and feathers, but keep it simple so the emblem does not overwhelm the flag. The main goal is to make the Mexican flag recognizable but simple. Erase any rough sketches that remain, and smooth out the shapes to give the flag a finished appearance.
- Color the stripes and emblem.
Paint the left stripe green, the center stripe white, and the right stripe red. For the emblem, carefully add brown to the eagle, green to the cactus, and smaller accents like red for berries if desired. The colors of the Mexican flag are very symbolic, so keeping them authentic is important.
Additional Mexican Flag Drawing Tutorial
Sketch the top contour of the flag with a curved horizontal line, then extend a vertical edge to form the flagโs height. Close the shape with the lower and left curved lines. Draw the flagpole with straight vertical lines and place a small circle at the top to represent the finial.
Divide the flag into three vertical sections, making them equal in width. Inside the middle section, illustrate the emblem with simplified curved and circular lines to create its form without excessive detail. Once the structure is ready, trace the outlines carefully, remove extra construction lines, and color the flag in its correct sequence: green on the left, white with the emblem in the center, and red on the right.

Conclusion
Now you can draw the Mexican flag. I recommend that you familiarize yourself with the flags of other countries and try to draw them yourself using the acquired skills. Use the same drawing principles that you used in this walkthrough, just paint the flags different colors. It will be very interesting. This will train your ability to draw straight lines and broaden your horizons.
Also, try to draw other flags, using the same method. For example, you can draw the US flag or or come up with your own flag for an imaginary state.
