How to Draw Agent J: Introduction

On my website, I often show how to draw movie characters, especially those from sci-fi films. For example, we’ve already learned how to draw Grogu from Star Wars and how to draw Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy. These characters are great for practicing because they come from stories that many people enjoy and recognize.

Today, we’ll return to another really cool movie and learn how to draw Agent J from Men in Black. We’ll be using a simplified drawing style that I specifically developed to make it easier for kids and beginners to follow.

I’ve said this before, but it’s worth repeating here: learning to draw is a lot more enjoyable and effective when you’re working with characters you actually like. It’s much easier to stay motivated while practicing proportions, color placement, contrast, and other drawing techniques if you’re drawing something that genuinely interests you. This is especially true for kids or those who are just starting out and might feel intimidated by more complex subjects.

In this drawing tutorial, we’ll also focus on how to create recognizable characters by adding just a few key details. For tutorial on how to draw Agent J, those important features are his glasses and mustache – small elements that instantly define his look. By learning to convey these kinds of traits, you can make your drawings more distinctive even with a simple style.

How to Draw Agent J

  1. Sketch the head and body guidelines.

For the head, draw a rounded rectangular shape. Then, just below the head, draw Agent J’s torso as simple oval shape. Make sure there’s enough space below for the legs and arms that will come later. Keeping the shapes light and simple will make it easier to adjust lines later on if needed.Sketch the head and body guidelines

  2. Add the facial features and sunglasses.

Now, let’s work on the face. Start by drawing the sunglasses of Agent J using simple angular shapes. Next, sketch eyebrows above the sunglasses with a couple of small ovals. After that, draw the nose and small mustache just under the glasses. Below the mustache, sketch a small, closed mouth.Add the facial features and sunglasses

  3. Draw Agent J’s hair and ears.

Now, draw the ears by adding two semi-circles on each side of the head, aligned with the eye level. Next, create a clean hairline across the top and sides of the head to draw Agent J’s short, neatly trimmed hairstyle. The hairline should follow the curve of the head and dip slightly at the temples.Draw Agent J’s hair and ears

  4. Begin drawing Agent J’s jacket.

Now that the head is finished, start sketching Agent J’s suit jacket. First, draw two lines to form the sides of the jacket. Then, add the jacket lapels by drawing two angular shapes. Add two small circles or dots on the right side of the jacket to draw the buttons.Begin drawing Agent J’s jacket

  5. Draw Agent J’s legs and feet.

Let’s move on to the lower half of Agent J’s figure. Starting from the bottom of the jacket, draw two straight shapes to form each leg. These shapes should come down to a rounded end to represent the shoes. Draw the feet of Agent J as small ovals at the bottom of each leg to keep things simple.Draw Agent J’s legs and feet

  6. Draw the arms and hands.

Now, from the shoulder area draw straight lines down toward the waist on each side of the body to outline the arms of the suit. Near the bottom, just above where the legs begin, draw the hands as a couple of small simple shapes. These should be minimal and cartoon-like, just peeking out from under the sleeves.Draw the arms and hands

  7. Add the tie and shirt details.

Now it’s time to add the important inner details of Agent J’s outfit. Draw the necktie in the center of the jacket and add the collar of the shirt with a couple of triangular shapes. Use a small triangle for the knot, then draw the bottom of the tie. After that, add lines under the tie to draw the belt.Add the tie and shirt details

  8. Erase the guidelines from Agent J.

Darken the lines you want to keep and erase any unnecessary construction lines or overlapping parts. Add some details, if you want to make your Agent J drawing look more polished. Also, don’t forget to double-check that everything in your sketch is symmetrical and ready for coloring.Erase the guidelines from Agent J

  9. Color the drawing of Agent J.

To color the character, use a dark brown shade for Agent J’s skin and a slightly darker brown for his mustache. His hair and eyebrows should match the mustache in color. Color the sunglasses dark gray or black, leaving a few light highlights. The suit and shoes should be a solid black or dark gray.Color the drawing of Agent J

Conclusion

In this lesson, we used very simple techniques to create a recognizable image of a character from a well-known movie universe. As I’ve mentioned before, drawing a character is always about building a clear and memorable image. In lessons like how to draw Darth Vader or other characters with bold, distinctive features, we rely on obvious visual elements – like a distinctive helmet and black cape – that are instantly associated with the character.

But in this case, we had to create a recognizable figure using much more ordinary-looking details. Even though they may seem simple at first, the right combination – like the sunglasses, suit, and mustache – makes it immediately clear who the character is. This shows how subtle choices can still lead to a strong and familiar result.

Through this lesson, we practiced how to draw Agent J, worked on building recognizable characters, and, once again, improved our skills in drawing the human figure – one of the most important skills for any artist.

When you know how to draw the human body, you can create almost any character simply by adding the right features and accessories. And that’s exactly what we focused on in this simple, but very useful, drawing lesson.
