How to Draw a Submarine
In this easy lesson, I will show you how to draw a submarine, and as a bonus, I will demonstrate how to depict a U-boat underwater.
How to Draw a Submarine: Introduction
On my site, I often publish lessons on drawing various types of transport that carry people on land, in the air, and in the water. Previously, for example, I showed how to draw a plane, and now I will demonstrate how to draw a submarine.
Traditionally, this submarine drawing lesson consists of simple parts and details. Using basic geometric shapes, we will draw a submarine that, while basic, appears quite convincing.
By changing and adapting parts of this submarine, you can give it a more unique and interesting look. Additionally, you can add details to your submarine drawing, such as depicting a sailor looking out of a porthole.
To complement your knowledge, I have added another lesson in which I will show you how to draw a submarine underwater. I will show you how to make your drawing appear as if this vehicle is in the water using simple yet effective methods.

How to Draw a Submarine
- Draw the body of the submarine.
Begin drawing a submarine by sketching a large, smooth oval shape in the center of your paper. This oval serves as the body of the submarine, creating a base for all other details. Use a pencil and draw lightly, as you may need to erase parts of this shape later when adding details.
- Illustrate the porthole.
Inside the oval, draw a medium-sized circle to represent the submarine’s window or porthole. Then, draw a slightly larger circle around the first one, giving the appearance of a rim or frame around the window. For better symmetry, try drawing the circles using a circular object or a drawing compass.
- Detail the front section and top.
Next, add a straight, vertical line near the right edge of the oval. This line marks the division between the submarine’s main body and its front section. At the top of the submarine’s body, draw the base of the periscope using a trapezoidal geometric figure.
- Add the periscope.
Draw the periscope emerging from the top of the submarine. Begin by sketching two short, curved vertical lines that start at the top of the periscope base from the previous step. Extend the lines upward, and then add a horizontal curve at the top, which gives the periscope its distinct shape.
- Detail the back of the U-boat.
Add a couple of small, rounded shapes at the very back of the submarine’s body. These shapes represent the submarine’s back section, where the propeller will start from. The base of the propeller should be approximately level with the window that was drawn in step two.
- Add the propeller at the back.
Now, it’s time to add the propeller at the back of the submarine. To do this, draw fins extending from each side of the oval, drawn in the previous step. Shape these fins as elongated, teardrop-like ovals, with the rounded ends. These fins should be even in size and symmetrical to each other.
- Add the rivets and refine the sketch.
To make your submarine drawing look more realistic, add small circles along the body to represent rivets. Draw them around the window frame and along the front section, evenly spaced. Also, finalize the sketch and delete the guidelines if necessary.
- Color the submarine.
Use a bright yellow for the main parts of the body, as yellow is a popular color for cartoon or non-military submarines. Color the propeller and front section red, and add blue or gray to the porthole to give it a realistic, glass-like appearance.

How to Draw a Submarine Underwater
The main differences between this and the first tutorial on how to draw a submarine include the overall shape and design of the submarine, as well as the addition of an underwater setting. In this version, the submarine has a more tapered shape, and details such as small portholes, bubbles, and an outline representing water are added. The tutorial finishes with a basic underwater scene, which includes a blue background to illustrate the submarine submerged in water.
To draw a submarine in the water, start by sketching a long, rounded shape with a slightly tapered end, forming the body. Add small ovals along the side to represent portholes, and draw a small tail fin at the back. At the top, add a short rectangle to form the conning tower. Include a periscope by drawing a narrow rectangle extending from the top.
To depict the submarine underwater, draw a curved line around it, creating the appearance of water with. To draw waves, sketch a wavy line at the top. Then, draw bubbles near the submarine, enhancing the underwater effect.
Finally, color the submarine in a gray shade and add a light blue background to complete the underwater scene. To enhance the effect of the submarine being underwater further, you can apply a slight blue tint to the submarine and draw fishes swimming nearby. You can also draw an octopus or other sea creatures for a more interesting effect. This simple approach effectively shows how to draw a submarine in water.
